Caption-Abstract A fisherman is returning after fishing at the beach in The Gambia, West Africa. This beach has strong undercurrents and many of the local people has died here because they did not know how to swim. Still they jump into the sea to play, and when the undercurrents are too strong they are swept away and drown. When I visited the first time, some foreigners had started a lifeguard system and also started flagging to show how safe it was to swim. This has helped to dramatically reduce the number of people that die on these beaches. During the daytime, the beaches are filled with tourists, but in the evening, most poeple here are locals. The sun sets very quickly this close to the equator, and it is generally not considered too safe to walk along the beach in the dark.
